I'm the one in the Santa suit.
Hello everybody, and thanks for checking out the blog! My name is Dillon Fitzgerald and I am currently a first year student at Wayne State University. I am studying business as well as beginning to produce my own music in hopes to one day pursue a career in the field of EDM. Luckily I still have plenty of time to accomplish such a task, so for now I am a full time student.
Throughout my writing career, I have always been more interested in the creative aspect of writing. In fact, my first creative writing class was back in the third grade, and this was the first time I saw writing in a way that I could enjoy. Although throughout my life, I have never been big on writing, it has always been my forte to write from a more abstract and creative standpoint. As I progressed through the grades, most of my teachers approached writing as a more formulated process and I was not really given the chance to implement creativity. Especially during my high school years, most of the papers I was required to write, if not all of them were very specific and followed a given structure causing me to lose much of my interest in English as a subject. However, if I am given the chance to write about something that truly interests me, my best efforts are displayed. This is one of the main reasons that English 1020 helped me so much as a writer. In this class, I was given enough freedom to choose subjects that I was interested in for the big projects. This was combined with our in class learning, which really solidified the idea of writing as a process in which I use many steps to create a successful piece.
I believe that I have greatly evolved as a writer this semester and my work reflects that. Rather than just sitting down and writing a paper, I now see it as more of a process in which I apply skills that I have learned throughout the semester. After completing my final works, I can confidently say that rhetoric has become much more of a usable tool for me. I feel that I am now more able to spot out rhetoric in texts, and in turn am better suited to see opportunities where I can implement rhetoric in my own writing. The beauty of rhetoric is that you can constantly build on it, forcing me as a writer to think of a paper like a puzzle in which I am constantly building towards my central claim. One of my greatest improvements throughout this semester of ENG 1020 is my ability to structure a paper into a stronger and more developed argument. I also see great importance in steps of the writing process I used to pay little attention to. I am thankful for my new set of skills (thanks Jared) and plan on building of these skills to ultimately work towards my success.
